Swimming with a whale shark is a good reason to come to Mafia Island, but it’s only one part of a stay here. You might spend another morning exploring the reefs of Chole Bay, then take a boat to a sandbank for a picnic. After several days on safari, having an afternoon with nothing planned can be just as welcome.
Mafia lies off mainland Tanzania, south of Zanzibar, in a separate archipelago. It suits travelers who want marine activities and a relaxed lodge stay. You don’t need to dive to enjoy it, but if swimming straight from your room is a priority, choose your beach and lodge carefully.
Where you stay shapes your days: whale-shark trips leave from the west coast, while Chole Bay and its reefs are on the eastern side.
We’ll help you choose when to go and where to stay, then explore the beaches and boat trips worth making time for.
Swimming With Whale Sharks on Mafia Island
Whale sharks are the largest fish in the world, feeding on plankton despite their enormous size. Watching one pass through the water beside you can be the highlight of a Mafia trip.
October through March is the usual season for visitor encounters. Trips head out from the west coast near Kilindoni, the island’s main town. Sightings depend on conditions and the animals themselves, so leave room for another outing if whale sharks are the main reason you’re coming.
Whale sharks can remain around Mafia outside those months, even when they’re harder to find at the surface. If swimming with them is the priority, plan around the peak encounter season.

What to expect on the water
The experience begins with a briefing and a boat trip to search for the sharks. If conditions allow an encounter, you’ll enter the water with a mask and snorkel. No diving qualification is required, but you need to be able to swim, move around fast, and feel comfortable in open water.
If you’re new to snorkeling, practicing with a mask before the trip can make that first swim less daunting. Let the operator know your swimming experience, especially if you’re bringing children, so they can advise on the outing and the support available.
Give the animals space and follow your guide’s instructions. A good operator will explain how swimmers enter the water and how they manage encounters when other boats are nearby.
Never touch or chase a shark. Our guide to responsible tourism in Tanzania offers more advice on choosing wildlife experiences thoughtfully.
Snorkeling, Diving, and Mafia Island Marine Park
The reefs around Chole Bay give you a reason to return to the water even after you’ve seen a whale shark. The bay forms part of Mafia Island Marine Park, with coral reefs, seagrass beds, and mangroves to explore.
Snorkeling lets you explore the reefs without scuba training. For beginners, a suitable site needs more than shallow water: easy boat access and manageable currents also matter.
Groupers and Napoleon wrasse patrol Chole Bay’s reefs, while shore-based dives over sand and seagrass offer the chance to search for seahorses. These slower dives can be especially rewarding if you enjoy noticing the details.
Mafia Island Diving offers inner-bay sites year-round and takes advanced divers to its outer-bay sites between October and March. The exposed sites can involve stronger currents.
Tides determine departure times and which sites are accessible, so arrange your main diving days before filling the rest of your stay.
Can you learn to dive on Mafia?
Yes. The center offers introductory experiences and certification courses. An introductory dive lets you try scuba before committing to a full course, which needs time for theory and training in your itinerary.
Mafia Island Beaches, Sandbanks, and Time Ashore
Beach time on Mafia might be an afternoon on the sand near your room or a boat ride to a sandbank that disappears with the tide. Some beaches are also worth a separate outing.

Which beaches should you consider?
Utende Beach is a useful choice if you want to spend much of your stay exploring Chole Bay. Dive centers and bay excursions are close at hand. For swimming straight from shore, the tide and the particular stretch of beach still matter, so check what it’s like beside your chosen lodge.
On the west coast, the beach at Butiama Beach Lodge combines time by the water with a convenient departure point for whale-shark trips. Reef trips in Chole Bay involve crossing to the other side of the island.
Ras Kisimani is worth considering for a beach day away from your lodge. Local excursions reach this fishing village by car or bajaj, the three-wheeled taxis used on the island. The drive takes you past palms and along village roads, giving you a chance to see more of Mafia along the way.
Take a boat to a sandbank
Funguni sandbank emerges around low tide, creating a temporary place to swim or settle down for a picnic. A local crew can take you there, with the returning water setting the time to leave. For a picnic trip, agree on food, drinking water, and shade with your lodge when booking.
Spend time on Chole Island
A walk on nearby Chole Island gives you time to get to know the place beyond its reefs. At the village boatyard, craftspeople shape wooden dhows by eye using hand tools. A local guide can explain the work behind the boats you’ve been seeing out on the bay.
Elsewhere on the island, old buildings reflect Chole’s trading history and German colonial period. Guided walks can include the former customs house and prison, as well as the village and boatyard.
There is enough to linger over, so leave room in the day for more than a quick stop between boat trips.

Visit with a local host or guide, and let conversation set some of the pace. Clothing that covers your shoulders and knees is appropriate in the village. Ask before photographing people.
Is Mafia worth visiting if you don’t dive?
You can enjoy a stay here without diving. Snorkeling, sandbank outings, and time on Chole Island give you several ways to explore.
If most of your days will be on land, choose a lodge where you’d happily spend a whole afternoon. A pool and a shaded place to read can matter as much as the excursions on offer.
Best Time to Visit Mafia Island
Choose your dates around the experience you most want. October through March is the usual window for whale-shark encounters and offers access to more exposed dive sites.
June through September brings cooler weather and can suit a stay focused on Chole Bay and time ashore.
| Your priority | When to consider visiting | What that means for your stay |
|---|---|---|
| Whale-shark encounters | Typically October through March | Allow flexibility for another outing if the first is unsuccessful. |
| A trip centered on reef diving | Start with October through March | Exposed sites can be seasonal; inner-bay options may be available outside these months. |
| Cooler weather | June through September | Pleasant time ashore can coincide with wind and swell that affect boat trips. |
| Travel during the long rains | Consider April and May carefully | Some lodges close, and the choice of activities may be limited. |
November and December can bring short rains, so whale-shark season does not mean uninterrupted sunshine. The longer rainy period generally begins around March, with April and May requiring the most care when planning a visit.
Some lodges close during the long rains, with closures sometimes extending into June. Check your property’s reopening date before booking an early-season stay.
For a July or August safari extension, focus on Chole Bay’s reefs, village visits, and your lodge rather than whale-shark encounters. Wind and swell can affect boat trips, so keep the order of outings flexible.
Where to Stay on Mafia Island
The first choice is where to base yourself. Whale-shark departures are on the west coast near Kilindoni, while Utende gives you access to Chole Bay on the eastern side. Chole Island adds a boat transfer to your journey.
| Area | Why choose it? | Detail to settle before booking |
|---|---|---|
| Kilindoni and the west coast | Convenient for the airport area and west-coast whale-shark trips | Pickup arrangements and transport for days in Chole Bay |
| Utende and Chole Bay | A base for reef snorkeling, diving, and bay excursions | Boat departures, marine park fees, and transfers for whale-shark outings |
| Chole Island | A small-island stay reached by boat from the Utende side | How the road-and-boat transfer fits your flights and activities |
You can explore both sides from one base. For a short stay, we’d usually favor settling into one place, so you have more time to enjoy it. Splitting a longer visit can make sense if you want several days focused on each coast.
These three stays show how different a Mafia vacation can feel, even within the same archipelago.
Butiama Beach Lodge: a base for whale-shark days
Butiama Beach Lodge has bungalows beside the beach near Kilindoni, outside the marine park. Whale-shark boats depart from its beach, and there’s a swimming pool for afternoons when you’d rather stay ashore. It suits a stay built around the west coast, with occasional trips across the island for the reefs.
Pole Pole: bay views and a place to unwind
Pole Pole sits among coconut palms overlooking Chole Bay. Its Bahari bungalows have private porches and air conditioning, and the lodge has a shared pool. It’s a good option to consider when one of you wants to dive while the other would rather spend the morning reading with a view. Families should note that the lodge accepts children ages six and older.
Chole Mjini: an open-air treehouse stay
Chole Mjini is reached by boat from the Utende side. Its open-air treehouses bring the sea breeze into your room, with fans and electricity among the comforts. Wi-Fi is available in shared areas rather than the treehouses. Choose it if sleeping close to the elements is part of the appeal. If you prefer an enclosed, air-conditioned room, a bungalow on Mafia is likely to suit you better.
Getting to Mafia Island and Planning Your Stay
Flights and transfers
Flying is generally the most practical way to add Mafia to a Tanzania safari. A direct flight from Dar es Salaam takes roughly 30–35 minutes. Auric Air lists connections from Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar and Selous/Nyerere; routing and any intermediate stops depend on your travel dates.
For ground transfers, Butiama Beach Lodge is about 10 minutes by car from the airport, while Pole Pole in Utende is about 20–30 minutes away.
Chole Island adds a boat crossing from the Utende side. If you’re arriving on an international flight, allow time for the domestic connection and any terminal transfer.
Check your airline’s baggage allowance before packing dive or camera equipment. Auric Air’s baggage policy sets out its current limits.
If you’re considering traveling by sea, confirm a current operator and schedule locally. Older traveler accounts of ferry or boat journeys aren’t a reliable basis for a time-sensitive safari connection.
How many nights should you stay?
Four nights is a good starting point for a first visit. That gives you three full days between arrival and departure, enough to explore without making every day an early start.
During whale-shark season, you could spend one day looking for the sharks and another snorkeling or diving in Chole Bay. Leave the third open for a second encounter trip, a sandbank outing, or time ashore. Agree on the order locally so it works with the tides and conditions.
If you scuba dive, build the required interval between your last dive and flight into the plan. Your dive center can help with scheduling; Divers Alert Network’s flying-after-diving guidance explains why the interval depends on the diving involved.
With only two nights, you may have just one full day. Choose the experience you want most and give it enough time. For several dive days, a course, or a slower vacation, allow a longer stay.
What should your budget include?
Compare the total cost of each option, including:
- Flights and transfers, including boats to your accommodation where needed.
- Accommodation and the meals included.
- Excursions, equipment rental, and additional pickups.
- Applicable marine park fees.
- Drinks, tips, and personal spending.
Marine park charges can apply even if you never get in the water. For a cost indication, Pole Pole lists a fee of US$23.60 per person per day, payable by credit card at the park gate.
Confirm the applicable rate and number of chargeable days with your lodge, including how arrival and departure days are counted.
A room farther from your main activities may involve more paid transfers. A package that includes several excursions can be good value if those are the outings you’d choose anyway.
Combining Mafia Island With a Tanzania Safari
After days of game drives, time on Mafia gives you a different way to explore Tanzania. You can keep looking for wildlife, swap the vehicle for a boat, and have some slower afternoons before heading home.
For a southern safari, Nyerere National Park can pair well with Mafia. Auric Air offers flights between them, with the exact routing and schedule depending on your dates. If you’re finishing in the Serengeti or elsewhere in northern Tanzania, work out the onward flights as part of the same itinerary.
Our Tanzania safari itineraries provide starting points for the mainland portion.
Mafia Island or Zanzibar?
Mafia Island is much quieter and less developed than Zanzibar, with a stronger focus on nature and marine life. It is particularly well known for its excellent diving and snorkeling, protected marine environment, and whale shark experiences. The island has a more remote, laid-back feel and is ideal if you are looking for peace, fewer tourists, and time in nature rather than a lot of sightseeing or nightlife. You don’t need to be a diver, but an interest in the marine setting will help you get more from your stay.
Zanzibar is the larger and more developed of the two and offers a great combination of beaches, culture, history and activities. You can combine time at the beach with a visit to historic Stone Town, a spice farm, Jozani Forest, dhow cruises, snorkeling and other excursions. There is also a much wider choice of hotels, restaurants and beach resorts. Zanzibar is therefore a good option if you would like a mix of relaxation and sightseeing, with plenty of options for things to do.
On a short trip, we’d usually suggest choosing one so you spend fewer days in transit.
